Daytona Beach Motorcycle Accident

Motorcycles put Daytona Beach on the map when Daytona Beach Bike Week began its annual motorcycle event and rally in January 1937. Since then, the 3 mile race has become a ten day gathering for up to 500,000 people from all over the U.S. But, every year a number of bikers in attendance lose their lives in motorcycle crashes.

The highest recorded number of deaths in Daytona Beach was 21 in 2006, with motorists responsible for 9 motorcycle fatalities. That put Volusia County among the top 10 counties for fatal motorcycle accidents that year.

The Daytona Beach motorcycle accident attorneys at Farah & Farah have represented thousands of motorcycle crash victims around Florida state. After 2006, Volusia County, as well as the state, launched a number of safety campaigns. This encouraged motorists to become more aware of motorcycles by learning to share the road, avoid driving distracted, and double-check blind spots. Motorcyclists were encouraged to "Ride Proud" and wear bright clothing that would be seen by all.

The effort appears to be working. Since 2006, fatal motorcycle accidents have been on the decline in Daytona Beach and in Florida.

  • In 2009, 7 people died in motorcycle accidents in Daytona Beach and 402 bikers and their passengers were killed in the state.
  • Between 2008 and 2009, motorcyclist and passenger fatalities decreased by more than 24%, after many years of increases.
  • Volusia County (Daytona Beach) had 22 motorcycle fatalities in 2009, a decline from 30 deaths in 2008, 23 in 2007, 34 in 2006 and 33 in 2005.
  • The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles found there were 482 motorcyclists injured in Volusia County in 2009, 500 in 2008, 517 in 2007, 538 in 2006 and 519 in 2005.
  • The Florida Motorcycle Safety Coalition says that 60 % of vehicle-motorcycle crashes in Florida are caused by motorists.

Bikers attending Bike Week will want to make sure they wear a helmet to protect against traumatic brain injury and avoid alcoholic beverages, as well as have adequate uninsured motorist coverage - just in case they are in an accident with an uninsured or underinsured motorist or biker.
